Non-Invasive Zinc Protoporphyrin Screening Offers Opportunities for Secondary Prevention of Iron Deficiency in Blood Donors

<b><i>Background:</i></b> Frequent blood donors are at high risk of developing iron deficiency. Currently, there is no potent screening during donation to detect deficient erythropoiesis (IDE) before anemia develops and deferral from inevitable. <b><i>Study Design Methods:</i></b> In addition capillary venous hemoglobin, the status 99 frequent was assessed by various parameters zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP). ZnPP determined high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) a new prototype fiber-optic device employed for non-invasive measurements through collection tubing (NI-tubing) on lip tissue (NI-lip). We aimed evaluate feasibility diagnostic value NI-tubing measurement early detection severe deficiency in donors. <b><i>Results:</i></b> HPLC reference showed narrow limits agreement 12.2 μmol ZnPP/mol heme very correlation (Spearman’s Rho = 0.938). Using cutoff 65 heme, (<i>n</i> 93) identified 100% with (IDA) an additional 38% IDE. Accordingly, would allow selective protection particularly vulnerable <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> accurate simple method implement determination into routine process. able identify majority subjects IDE IDA might therefore be valuable tool provide qualified information about dietary measures adjustments interval thereby help prevent hemoglobin future.
